Project Description

The New Plastic Road, is a documentary film that examines the gradual economic and social change of the remote communities at the mountainous area of Pamirs in Tajikistan. This remote area is connected with the rest of the world by a road that is part of the noted Silk Road. Hundred years ago the SIlk Road was affecting not just the local communities along the road network but also the “global community” back then.

Similarly, nowadays part of this road network, is affecting the global market and to an extend our daily lives. The evolution of industry and the development of commerce has affected our global community to a large extend.

Davlat (the Tajik merchandiser) who lives in the mountainous town of Khorog (Southeastern Tajikistan) next to the borders with Afghanistan, will help us understand the social changes that commerce can cause on daily life. The (silk) road itself as a unique character will connect different peoples’ stories along the road with which our main character - Davlat, interacts with them.
